Adding to the Olsen twin’s already established clothing brand, a nine-piece handbag line will grace the shelves of Barney’s, New York, in August. Complete with a doctor bag, day tote, shoulder bag and backpack, the 25-year old fashion team aspired to balance new ideas with previously recycled trends of the past. Ashley explains,” There are important style contributions from almost every era. Drawing on the right references at the right time is the key.” Addressing the ever-repetitive market, Mary-Kate comments “My problem is not with the trends themselves, but the fact that trends are constantly repeating themselves.” With both inspirational attributes set, Averyl Oates, buying director for Harvey Nichols, attributes the ever-growing success of The Row (Mary-Kate and Ashley’s line) to the “timeless generational appeal while still remaining directional.”

French couturier Christian Lacroix gets a second life as part of France’s national heritage; the owners of the label had confirmed a donation of 11 outfits for the country’s Decorative Arts Museum.

The French culture ministry Frederic Mitterrand announced a further 3,000 haute couture models from collections dating from the creation of the label in 1987 to its demise in 2009 would be lent to national museums when necessary.

The chief executive of the Christian Lacroix Company, Nicolas Topiol confirmed that the company “has always agreed to loan creations when asked.” The 3,000 models in its hands are currently in storage in a warehouse equipped with the appropriate facilities to insure the exclusive designs against the wear and tear of time.

Lacroix lost his house when a French court last December approved drastic cutbacks for the label, which lost nearly all its staff and its main clothes designing activities.

Every season, Neiman Marcus releases a list of the most important wardrobe purchases for the season to come.

  • Fur: With the price of fur at an all time high, designers have been flashing fur pieces as a sign of luxury and social status. Controversies aside, classy pelts will never go out of style.
  • Pearls: Recycling the classics, pearls have been made over from the original single stranded necklaces and bracelets to chunky, multi-stranded, mixed-media inventions. Intertwining chains and several strings of pearls, designers like Vera Wang have given an old look new life.
  • Boots of all Sorts: Keeping warm as well as looking stylish, boots will remain a style staple for years to come. This season’s trend is variety. From tall stiletto heels, wedges and flats, to thy highs, ankle booties and slouches, there is a functional boot on the market for every occasion.
  • Military influences: Making a comeback several seasons ago, army print, buttons, shoulder patches and rough materials are still circulating the fashion circuit.
  • Feathers: Adding feathers to cocktail dresses, shawls, shoes and purses gives an extra boost of whimsical to an ordinary outfit.
  • No more Hobos: Loose, over-sized, non-structured bags are now cast aside and controlled, organized purses have made a come back.
  • Lace: Last but not least, subtle sexy lace creeps up on every part of our wardrobes. Making dresses extra feminine, adding a pretty element to blouses and a special accent to shoes and booties, lace now qualifies as a fall staple.

Barbie fans everywhere rejoiced as John Galliano’s resort collection debuted in Shanghai on Saturday.  Usually known for his sexy bras, panties and over-the-top sex appealing collections, this good-girl innocence came as quite a shock to Dior followers. Mostly covered, but still shapely garments hued in light pinks, purples, and eggshell blues painted a picture-perfect sweetness reminiscent of a simpler time when girls were just girls.  Galliano told WWD that  “[China is an] emerging market and a big player in the field and very thirsty to understand couture, craftsmanship and the savoir faire Français.”  Let’s hope this reinvention of feminine style catches on…
