New York Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week will be taking over Manhattan February 11- 18. Designers, models, photographers and fans will be crowding around Bryant Park with excitement and one common love, fashion. Designers are nervous with anticipation of the reviews written almost immediately after the last model has strutted off the runway. Will their vision seep through into the minds of the drunk with power writers who hold infinite power over their careers? Will the chosen faces and bodies representing each garment be accepted as matched properly? Once described as “hangers walking down the runway” by Karl Lagerfeld, the models are pressured to be at their thinnest, have energy, sparkle and most importantly, put on an incredible, memorable show. Don’t trip! Tickets to the main tents at Bryant Park are coveted, exclusive and rather hard to come by. Celebrities, socialites and elite fashion executives are the general crowd encompassing the audience of the runway.
Photographers sit at the end of the runway, more than just snapping photos, they capture the essence of the collection and share it with the rest of the world, wishing that one day they too will be a part of the few magical moments of a runway show. Under this category, you will see hanging around the tents, tourists from all over the world, fashion students, and fans. Cameras in hand, rising at the crack of dawn, bundled up with gloves, scarfs and hot coco, these people are the heart of Bryant Park. Passion brings them loitering around the security infused tents with hopes of seeing any canvas bag holding accessories that might walk down the powerful, white catwalk. In this small square of Manhattan, during this particular week, a covered clothes rack is more than a clothes rack. It’s a secret only a small, exclusive society of people, sworn to secrecy, have had the privilege to preview. And in just hours, minutes, seconds, it will be exposed and become vulnerable to the scrutiny of the entire world. A picture of a covered clothes rack pushed by a man with crazy hair and black, skinny jeans means nothing. A picture of a covered clothes rack pushed by a man with crazy hair and black, skinny jeans up the steps of Bryant Park during the Mercedes-Benz Fashion week is a dream about to be unveiled for the world to judge. Excited? I am.
Lindsay Lohan has taken a break from partying (yeah right) to throw together a “fashion line”. Newly released sketches have given us a taste of what is to come and I think most senses would compare it at best to broccoli that has been left in the sun for several weeks. Corset dresses, too tight skirts and padded leggings seem to have thrown up all over her line. How original and ground breaking Lindsay, we are proud. Luckily, it won’t cost too much to look so cheap. Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales, Macy’s and Nordstrom will be retailing the garments from about $100 to $150.
Harry Winston has paid spectacular homage to the great city of New York with his collection inspired by and named after the city itself. Featured below is the Skyscraper platinum set ring that any New Yorker would be proud to boast. This cushion-cut cabochon sugarloaf sapphire atop rows of cascading diamonds embodies the architecture of the Chrysler Building and holds 2.70 carats of round cut brilliant diamonds.
Jan Jaap Ruijssenaars has spent six years forming a platform for a future floating bed. The sleek black platform is designed with magnets both on the floor and into the base of the bed, which repel each other and allow the platform to float. The genius idea was inspired from the 1968 cult film “2001: Space Odyssey” and will hold a price tag of 1.54 million dollars.
Harsh lines, deep Vs and contrasting colors start this Givenchy spring 2010 line with a sharp geometric bang. As looks come and go, a grey, brown and deep green pattern starts to slowly creep in until full suits with pointed edges and harem pants completely covered in the daring design make an exciting appearance. Evolving into a more feminine area of the line, the pattern is taken back to a jacket and paired with a draped chiffon, beige dress. Puffed sleeves, ruffles, detailed tops and shelled embellishments balance out the severity of the first few garments and make this a perfect fashion balance.
Chado Ralph Rucci’s RTW Spring 2010 line envelopes the wardrobe needs of any modern day workingwomen. From sexy, masculine pantsuits that will both accentuate the feminine form but also say, “I mean business”, to a black tie affair that would make you the star of any red carpet event.
Monochromatic color schemes embody seriousness, and keep the fashionista from heading way of the Paris Hiltons, but contain enough pop with a yellow skirt suit, pale pink accents, and bronze horizontal block stripes to obtain a muted femininity.
“Cocktail attire” would never be the dreaded small print on an invitation with Rucci on your side. His A-line skirts, empire waists, and full flirty skirts will make any women feel sexy, chic and ready to party. If it’s a more elegant affair, not to fear, Rucci has you covered. Sleek, simple, black or dramatic, feathered with pops of color, no matter your mood, this line has exactly what you need to be the bell of every ball.
While Tiger Woods lies low and stays out of the limelight, his wife Elin Nordegren has been spotted in the French Alps. An $8,000 a night chalet was booked to allow the golf icon’s wife to relax in privacy as the world’s press speculate on an upcoming divorce and child custody proceedings.
InsideLux has followed the hype surrounding gossip that Prince William will be proposing to Kate Middleton soon. Other sources have mentioned that it is the Queen who is placing presure on the prince to wed. Sky Bet has placed even odds on the prince proposing this year, while his chances of becoming King are placed at 25 to 1.

Edward Davenport, the London socialite and one of the Daily Mail’s most eligible bachelors was arrested in December following an investigation that unveiled a series of fraudulent transactions amounting to £12m. The full amount is yet to be determined as victims continue to come forward. The fraud centred on commercial loans granted by fictitious companies that mimicked those of well known London FTSE banks and lending companies.
