Jaeger is to acquire the 158-year old luxury British brand Aquascutum. The UK fashion chain celebrated 125 years in the fashion industry this January, and also recently achieved its second catwalk show at London Fashion Week. Once described as ‘Marks and Spencer without the mass-market appeal’ the company renovated itself to prove critics wrong when it’s February 2008 show left people enquiring as to whether this formerly dowdy company was ‘to be the new Burberry’. Headed by Harold Tillman, the new collections have been instantly coveted on the high-street, with the brand going from strength to strength, and this year Jaeger launches a limited edition of iconic pieces inspired by its own archive – vintage.
The brand plans to expand even further with the acquisition of Aquascutum, ‘maker of the great British trenchcoat.’ Aquascutum is also famed for dressing Baroness Thatcher whose name appeared on the World’s Best Dressed List for three years while they designed for her. It is to pass to Jaeger for an undisclosed sum, but it has been confirmed that the Asian brand rights to Aquascutum will be sold to Hong-Kong based YGM for ($23million) £13.7million.
