Luxury lovers can now anticipate the creation of a ($168million) €115 million luxury spa hotel and adjacent housing development in Andalusia, Spain, whose first images have just been revealed by Amin Taha Architects. Having won the commission back in April, against noted practices Thomas Heatherwick and David Adjaye amongst others, their design reflects a 17,00sqm 150 room luxury spa hotel. The amenities are arranged in a ‘town square’ fashion as a central role for the development which also comprises 224 homes ranging from 1 to 4 beds over a total 30,000sqm. Incorporated into each home will be a swimming pool, of which the owner can choose a lap, terrace or plunge pool. Those that opt not to have a personal pool will have access to the community pools that are included in the 8000sqm also set aside for garages and storage facilities. The hotel will also boast 6,000sqm of landscaped garden and pools. It will also provide tough competition for many of the prestigious hotels in the region including the newly opened (October 2008) Finca Cortensin Hotel Golf and Spa. However, despite the growing number of luxury hotels in the area, practice director Amin Taha is confident that their design will remain not only luxurious and highly contemporary but also environmentally friendly.
“The challenges we saw and highlighted through the interview process were in part related to the design/construction logistics of the very steep site but mostly how to set a precedent for sustainable development along a coastline that is disappearing under heavy urbanisation? Our approach was to combine planning height guidelines with passive environmental controls mainly through thermal mass. With part cut and part fill the development would essentially be blanketed under local flora with grey and rainwater storage irrigating the more heavily landscaped social areas.”
