Barbara Hulanicki is a name that you may not be familiar with, but chances are that she has affected your life one way or the other. As the iconic founder and designer of 1960’s cult label, Biba, Hulanicki helped to define a generation that was unlike any before and now her work has been documented through a ground-breaking film.
Directed by Louis Price, ‘Beyond Biba’ offers an insight into the lifestyle that was Biba and follows Hulanicki through her past, the rise of her fame and legacy and the role she played within reviving Miami during the eighties and nineties. However the film is not one of nostalgia, instead it has found the relationship that Biba still has with today’s fashion, today’s world, and shows how that even though the name may no longer be a part of our daily language, its soul still has a great presence in our current society.
Beyond Biba will show at the Gate Picturehouse, London on 20th September where Barbara Hulanicki will be doing a Q&A. It will also play at the Miami Beach Cinemateque, 11th September – 14th October.
